| Nobody was
surprised when Qugi's clutch hatched less than a week after Missalenai's,
considering the two draks had clutched at almost the same time. There was still
one unPaired aspirant form the last clutch, Santahl, hoping he might get lucky
this time. The other draks, Lian supposed, would just have to go unPaired.
Chakiai was in high spirits today as she followed her sponsorer to the entrance
of the Deep Cavern. "I've never been to a hatching before," the barely week-old
drakling said, bouncing excitedly from one foot to another. Kortrvan
chuckled. "What about your own hatching?" "Well, that wasss my hatching,
though, it doesssn't count!" Qugi emerged from the Deep Cavern then, proudly
harding a trio of newly-born draklings in front of her. "Ready, Lian?" Kortrvan
asked. When he didn't get an answer, he glanced back with a sigh. The archivist
was buried in one of his books again. With a somewhat irritated growl, the earth
drak closed his jaws on the book, and Lian pulled his hands back in alarm before
they were bitten as well. "Kortrvan, what'd you do that for?" "I'm beginning
to think we ssshould ban all books from the Deep Caverns." Kortrvan replied
after he spit out the tattered and slightly damp book. "You're too easssily
disstracted." "Oh, all right. I get the point," Lian grumbled as he got
ready to record the Pairings, Chakiai cackling with glee at his face. Qugi
chuckled a bit, and then gave an encouraging nudge to her children. A female
water looked shyly up at the single aspirant, Santahl. "My name isss Lakugi. If
you want, I'll Pair with you." Santahl's answer was an enthusiastic yes, and
Lian turned his attention to the other two. They were a female earth,
looking around with wonder, and a rather cheerful male plant. "Hey," Lian said,
trying to get the earth's attention. "There aren't any more aspirants. Do you
want to go to Mindspace?" He asked. She snapped to attention and fixed her
eyes on him. "Hmm? Oh, yeah! That sounds fine. I'm Gahnakugi," she added.
Lian nodded and turned to the plant. Or rather, where the plant had been.
The drakling was gone, and Qugi and the others where peering around the cavern
trying to figure out where he had gone. There was a high-pitched giggle from
behind Lian, and he turned to see his young charge, Chakiai, whispering avidly
with the missing drakling. He sighed, and ran a hand through his hair. Draklings
were so much trouble. "Guesssss what, Lian! Dirgiku wantss to sssstay here
too, and we've desscided we're going to Pair. Isssn't that great?" An excited
Chakiai exclaimed. Beside her, the male plant gave a big grin and said,
"Hi!" Lian just rolled his eyes skyward. "That's it. I'm never coming to
another hatching, ever again." | | |
